Chapter Eleven

“Maybe we should wait here,” Dad suggests to me. “Mitchell can go talk to Becky and let us know when he’s finished.”

I know he’s trying to spare me from witnessing Mitchell’s flirting, but I think it’s worse to not know what he’s saying and doing. “I’ll be fine. It’s just an act.” I shrug like it’s no big deal, but Dad can always see right through me.

He puts and arm around my shoulders. “I’m aware you know that here.” He taps my head. “It’s here that I’m worried about.” He motions to my heart.

“I’m good, Dad. Really.” Mitchell’s slipped up and said the L-word to me, but I haven’t said it back. I’m not ready to talk about that. I do trust Mitchell, though. “He’s only doing this because I asked him to.”

“Exactly. I’m not looking forward to this at all,” Mitchell says.

“Then I guess we should get it over with.” Dad starts for the front desk.

Mitchell reaches for me, but I pull away. “Becky will never fall for your flirting if she figures out we’re together.”

“Right.” Despite his agreement, he still looks disappointed.

Becky smiles when we approach her. “So, what did you both think? Do you have any questions I can answer for you? Or are you ready to join and let us get you into the best shape of your lives?”

Mitchell leans on the desk and smiles. “Actually, they’re still mulling it over. The decision was easy for me when I walked in and saw your beautiful face, but they might need more convincing.”

Becky blushes and giggles. “Oh, stop.” She flirtatiously swats at Mitchell’s arm. “Oh my. I see someone has been getting in some time with the weight bars.” She runs her hand along his bicep.

Dad pulls me toward the exit under the guise of showing me the workout clothing for sale. “Let’s just face this way and allow Mitchell to get the info we need.”

I thought I was finished having to watch women fawn all over Mitchell. Ever since we started dating, he’s totally ignored any looks or flirtatious comments from other women. But he seems to have fallen right back into his old ways with Becky. It’s a little too much to stomach.

Becky giggles again, and Dad puts his arm around me. “Relax your fists. You’re supposed to look happy, not like you want to punch her in the face.”

“But I do want to punch her in the face.”

Dad chuckles and releases me. “Green is not your color, pumpkin. Remember he only has eyes for you.”

“Just tell me when it’s over.”

“It’s over,” Mitchell says, coming up beside me.

I look up at him. “Did you get the list?”

“Please. Did you ever doubt me?” He smiles, wraps an arm over my shoulder, and leads me to the door.

“What are you doing?” I ask. “Isn’t Becky supposed to think you’re interested in her?”

“Not anymore. I got what we need. And in case you haven’t noticed, I’ve never been good at hiding my feelings for you.”

I look back over my shoulder at Becky, who is eyeing us with a furrowed brow.
